Day 1
Course Introduction
- How the course is presented
- Why the understanding of the worldwide Natural Gas industry is important
- The fundamental driving forces in the industry that will be
- examined
- A review of the terminology that will be used in the course
Sources of Natural Gas
Presentation of the various sources of natural gas by the use of schematics and photos. The basics of the cost elements that effect gas pricing and where applicable the environmental and political considerations are reviewed for the following sources:
- Associated gas
- Single phase gas
- Shale gas & understanding the process of fracking
- Coal bed Methane
- Tight formation gas
- Condensate wells
- Offshore production
- Arctic (Severe cold climate) production
Case study: Sources of Natural Gas A review of the selection process and criteria for the machinery needed to accomplish production for projects involving five of the basic sources of natural gas. This will include the examination of unique criteria for desert, arctic and offshore production based on existing projects.
Exercise:
The data presented in the worldwide review of gas business opportunities, 2012 to 2035 will be discussed in an open format to determine the cost and issue bases for the discussions for Day 3. This interactive discussion will be geared towards forming a group consensus and provide an ability to include up-to-date data in our Day 3 examinations of issues and cost
Day 2
Uses of Natural Gas
Presents the technology using schematics and photos, basic gas cost data, reviews plant cost analysis, criteria for selection
of the process or use:
- Gas plants at wellhead or distribution center includes the criteria for gas dehydration
- Long distance gas pipelines with basic criteria for increasing flow
- LNG where used and the factors, including cost affecting the building of a plant. Includes the need and cost for shipment and regasification plants.
- Gas to liquids (GTL) plants including the costs, history and future
- Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) operation for vehicles and how this compares in the race for green energy.
- Power generation using combined cycle plants (CCGT) and feasibility for replacing coal with gas. How does the price of gas affect the selection of gas turbines for power generation?
- Use of heavy ends from gas plants in petrochemical production. Includes a review of the transportation criteria and costs.
- Review of machinery used in production and uses of the gas
- Arctic (Severe cold climate) production
Exercise:
Not all geographical areas can support all the uses of natural gas that have been discussed. After the presentation of the uses we will examine the criteria to determine the basis for plant location.
Case study: Uses of Natural Gas An examination of the criteria for, and ultimate decisions, on two significant USA projects one being an interstate gas transmission project and the other being a Gas to Liquids (GTL) plant in Ohio and Louisiana. The competing end uses for the gas are analysed as well.
Day 3
An examination of the criteria for the building of
LNG plants
A set of cost information and other criteria will be provided to allow an investigation into understanding how worldwide conditions influence the decision to construct an LNG plant. The examination will include some recent examples of the political influence on the construction decision.
Case studies:
- For the discussion on LNG there will be multiple scenarios presented for review namely:
- LNG production in Australia with shipment to Japan
- LNG production in Qatar with shipment to
- Europe and the United States
- Production in Nigeria with shipment to Europe and the United States
- A group discussion of the political considerations including Russia and Iran
The effect of the use of natural gas on environmental
issues
Subject specific information will be provided to enable the discussion of two areas of use; power generation and CNG in vehicles. The group will conclude this portion with a view to assessing the effect of natural gas on the green initiatives.
Why shale gas and fracking are leading the revolution
This will include a closer look at the processes used in non conventional natural gas extraction by fracking and its effect on crude oil production. The environmental and political issues will be discussed in an open format as well as the effect on investment decisions.
Whats new on the technology horizon?
- Drilling and completion
- Arctic area initiatives
- Deep water production
- The effect of some technologies on the cost of producing
Exercise:
For the discussion of environmental issues, a basis to properly analyse the issues on a more realistic cost impact basis will be presented and discussed. It is of importance to have an economic basis to evaluate the various green initiatives.
