This 3-day course focuses on the importance of using performance metrics in the upstream petroleum sector. If you can’t measure it, you certainly can’t manage it effectively. The application of techniques such as benchmarking and relevant key performance indicators enables upstream managers to maintain efficiency and effectiveness despite the backdrop of continuing price volatility and rising capital and operating costs.

Topics covered:

  • Setting the performance goals
  • Recording and tracking performance
  • Analysing and scrutinising performance inputs
  • Case studies of project performance
  • Case studies of corporate performance
  • Importance of HSE performance indicators
  • Application of benchmarking to the upstream sector
  • Qualitative methodology and balanced scorecards
  • The use of incentives to enhance performance

Course Overview

Prior to the mid-1980s the upstream petroleum sector paid scant attention to key performance indicators and the benchmarking process, preferring to concentrate on production rates, and hence short-term revenue, to the exclusion of many other considerations.

However, following dramatic price collapse in the mid-1980s and again in the late 1990s, the upstream sector started to develop efficiencies that were learnt by following practices previously utilised in other industries. In particular, this involved the recording and tracking of key performance indicators and using benchmarking methodology.

The topics are reviewed using PowerPoint presentations, video clips and case studies that will reinforce your understanding and knowledge.
